03/12/2004 Archived Entry: "NO DBZ Live Action Movie!"

Straight from KyleHebert.com:

I literally JUST got off the phone with FOX Studios in Los Angeles, CA. I asked outright about the upcoming live action Dragonball/Z movie.

This is exactly what I was told by my contact:

"The Dragonball Z movie? We don't have that. I 've got a lot of calls about that so I called around [the studio]. We won't be making that [movie]."

So there you have it, folks. That is the OFFICIAL story from FOX. I know some of you may be disappointed, but I also think it's a blessing.

Here's another article reguarding the movie, by Otherworld Steve:
I decided to follow up a bit more regarding the rumored live action Dragonball/Z movie. One persistant rumor has been that "George Lucas' CGI company ILM has signed a contract to do the special effects."

Today I called Ellen Pasternack, Public Relations for ILM. I asked her if the rumor was true; if ILM was brought on board to provide the special effects for the Dragonball/Z live action movie. Ms. Pasternack's reply was that it had been mentioned, but ILM never officially signed off on anything and it never came to be. She also commented that, as far as she knows, the film is not being made.

The news are definitely shocking, but I agree with Kyle: it's a blessing. DBZ would have been destroyed in the movie. Keep in mind that no official statement has been released by 20th Century Fox, but these news come from a trustworthy source. Also, remember that FUNimation had nothing to do with the movie, so don't expect any comments on the situation from them. If anything further develops, we'll keep you informed.

Oh thank God! I was terrified at the idea of a live action movie.

Posted by Chuquita @ 03/12/2004 03:44 PM EST

wow. I didn't really care about the dbz live action movie. but I didn't know it wouldn't be made. thats funny. what a rumor. maybe it'll be made just not yet.

Posted by DJ Maniac @ 03/12/2004 03:45 PM EST

I started to get skeptical when IMDB did not update, and it was still in pre-production with a release date of '04. However, what really pisses me off is the fact that Fox never tried to douse the rumor. This led millions of fans to believe that a movie was in developement when it actually was not. I hope that a company like Warner Bros. or New Line Cinema picks this up. If they could do to DBZ what they did to LOTR: ROTK, then the movie may be truly good.(Akira would need to be more involved.)
You would think that FOX would check things like IMDB.
This rumor actually had me fooled for awhile. Does anyone know how this rumor started?

Posted by Davis 51 @ 03/12/2004 04:49 PM EST

Why would fox tell you guys if they were making it or not i mean come on how stupid can you be....geez

Posted by Tony @ 03/12/2004 09:58 PM EST

Goddamn Beckett Dbz started the rumor. If you look in past issues, you will see. I am SO pissed at them. But at least we won't have to hear millions of Anti-DBZ message board posters say that "The Dbz movie proves that DBZ sucks big balls!"

Posted by Goten @ 03/12/2004 10:14 PM EST

WTF!!! No movie! Thats BS man no fair I wanted to see it it may not have been good but it would be nice to actually see something 3D ya know... :-(

Posted by Solid_American @ 03/13/2004 10:21 AM EST

-_-' ok....

Posted by TheUnlimited @ 03/13/2004 10:24 AM EST

Live action would have been interesting to see how well they would have done, but yes it's a blessing.

Personally I would have liked them to continue th story a bit by either asking Akira to make a new movie or two, or Maybe put one fo the upcomming ones in theaters or something, like a double feature to fill a whole 2 hrs.

Posted by Zano @ 03/13/2004 10:29 AM EST

So it's... fake?

I am just annoyed that there is no such thing. It's not fair! I had really wanted to see it.. Hey, how'd they come up with faking all those people playing the parts?

Posted by SSJ Saiyakid @ 03/13/2004 12:02 PM EST

Haha, I really didn't care if the movie would be made or not, but it is shocking. If it is fake, it's surprising that the rumors carried on for so long...

Posted by Namy @ 03/13/2004 12:33 PM EST

Well I'll tell ya one thing...a Live Action Movie woulda been nice...cause ALL the other DBZ movie's have been trash..

Im mean come'on...every DragonBall anime movie ends with Goku or someone beatin the bad guy with some weak punch or sumthing.

A movie would be something to see.

I Hope YOUR Story Is Fake.

Posted by Incognito @ 03/13/2004 01:10 PM EST

hallieugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i was afraid dbz would be destroyed by this awful rumor. !@@$#%^&*()$#@% you becket for starting this rumor

Posted by super vegeta @ 03/13/2004 03:16 PM EST

I just want to clarify something:

The movie was NOT a rumor. It wasn't fake either. Its production was OFFICIAL, and even listed by IMDB. They just cancelled it, which is a different thing.

Posted by XZ @ 03/13/2004 07:46 PM EST

Thanx XZ. I still stand by my previous statements though(About how New Line Cinema should pick this up)

Posted by Davis 51 @ 03/13/2004 07:51 PM EST

Well i for one think this is a damn shame, i have been a dbz fan for 8 years now and i think this would have boosted dbz's popularity, i think you ppl take this far to seriously saying it will destroy dbz for all you know fox seen what a negative responce it was having and canceled it so keep in mind YOU could have destroyed what might have been a fantasic movie

Posted by Leckie @ 03/13/2004 08:14 PM EST

I think the Live Action Movie, would have either boosted Dragonballs popularity(even though its VERY popular as it is)or maybe ruined Dragonball. But,who knows? It still would have been an awesome movie either way.

*crys*
WWAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've been waiting for the movie since May of 2002!!!!! WWWWWWWWHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYY?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
And, please don't think I'm a crybaby!!!! CAUSE I'M NOT!!!!!! And, people, don't be mad at Becket... It's not their fault. Okay, so I "kinda" agree about the whole 'Movie sceewing up DBZ' thing and all! Stick with the anime.

Posted by Vegito710 @ 03/14/2004 08:16 AM EST

Solid_American... *thumbs-up* you rock!!!! I'm with you!!!!

Posted by Vegito710 @ 03/14/2004 08:18 AM EST

Its so a great pity ... but when Fox is so stupid to realize what BIG Power the Dragonball Saga have .... we couldn´t do nothing -
I hope that there will be someday a real adaptation of Dragonball... because DB has deserved it, to be an Oscar winning Epos ... -

Thanks a lot to all you real fans there out side ...

Posted by Bardock @ 03/14/2004 01:44 PM EST

SCREW U FOX! HOW COULD U I MEAN GEEZ! I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS MOVIE FOR LIKE A YEAR! MAN EVEN IF IT DID SUCK IM WITH SOLID_AMERICAN....SEEING A 3-D DBZ WOULD BE COOL!

Posted by Dark @ 03/14/2004 06:45 PM EST

hmm....I smell bullshit. even the official dbz website said a live action movie would be taking place.

Posted by Tel @ 03/15/2004 02:40 AM EST

no one said the damn movie was canceled or wasnt being made it just means fox and ILM arent doing the movie

Posted by robotman7 @ 03/15/2004 12:24 PM EST

robotman7:

The movie was assigned to Fox. If they said it won't be made, it's because it's cancelled or they're just hiding it. Like I said, no official statement has been released about this issue, but these are the news at the moment.

Posted by XZ @ 03/15/2004 02:08 PM EST

I would like to see a live action dbz movie, but i think that it's best that it got cancelled. In my opinion, dbz is a anime and it should remain one. Movie would be too weired.

Posted by 0Someone @ 03/15/2004 03:21 PM EST

OH NO!! I WAITED SOO LONG FOR IT TO COME OUT!! AND NOW THEY SAY ITS CANCELLED!! AWW MAN!! DAMN FOX!!

Posted by Syl @ 03/15/2004 06:28 PM EST

Man, no movie, i know some dumbasses think a movie would mess up DBZ, but a movie would make it that much more popular, even if it was a flop or not, too bad it's not gunna happen...

Posted by MrBuu @ 03/16/2004 02:16 AM EST

WHO IS UP FOR STARTING A PETITION TOP GET IT MADE????

Posted by Leckie @ 03/16/2004 06:25 AM EST

I Am. If Fox makes a statement about it not being made, Petitiononline.com, here we come!

Posted by Goten @ 03/16/2004 07:36 AM EST

nice one well contact me if your serious :-P

Posted by leckie @ 03/16/2004 01:19 PM EST

A Petition?!?!?!?!? That is taking the matter a little too far. The movie would have either been a blockbuster, or a complete flop.
The fact that they shugged it off ("The DragonballZ Movie? We dont have that") is disgusting. As far as I know, they haven't even released an official statement. (God knows how long it's been in this state.)
With that attitude, if it was made, it will suck.
I don't know about you, but at this point, I think that fox was just looking for a good liscence to grab, in order to boost their popularity. (i.e. One person tells his his hardcore DBZ Fanboy friend that this movie is being made by fox, he goes to Fox's website in hopes of finding info, and while they are there, they find out about other Fox movies, which he may go see.)

Sorry if I bored you.

Posted by Davis 51 @ 03/16/2004 04:34 PM EST

I don't see why ya'll are so upset. Everything that dbzsc or dbz.com or even beckett has said has been RUMORS. aka nobody really knows what is going on. I mean it is just a television show. (it's not the end of the world) Ya, it'd be cool to see dbz on the big screen, but if it's not being made, then it's not beening made, oh well. (Is dbz the only thing in your life? SHESH) btw, don't trust a FAN site when they say anything about official news. (remeber, it's a FAN site) >

Posted by mwzloyal @ 03/16/2004 05:13 PM EST

HeLLo!?! It was not a rumor! It was cancelled.

Posted by Davis 51 @ 03/16/2004 06:58 PM EST

Umm... I haven't seen ANYTHING official. The movie couldn't have been cancelled if it didn't exist in the first place. As I said, just because someone has a friend who has a friend (blah blah blah) that heard something doesn't mean it acctually exists in the first place. Try to think OUTSIDE the box.

Posted by mwzloyal @ 03/16/2004 10:05 PM EST

The more I think about it, I am kinda pissed, because I've been waiting since December of 2001. So really the last 3 years of waitin were a waste.

oh well, Aliens Vs Predator movie August 8th 2004, not a rumor.

Posted by Zano @ 03/17/2004 05:03 PM EST

well i would go here they are the #1 site for the dbz movie news and most is true before we got any info!

Posted by kb @ 03/17/2004 05:13 PM EST

This doesn't mean the DBZ live action movie won't happen. For one, movie companies like FOX denie production of movies all the time, most movies are completely secret. And also, sometimes movies are dropped, and picked up by other companies, its happened before, and can again. For this type of movie, i wouldn't expect them to release any information on it, or any promotions. Its a small time movie for a small audience, you wont here anything about it until, its ready to hit the big screen. Most of the information released have been rumors, don't listen to most of it, just listen to official sources, or extremely reliable resources, and you won't be led on.

Posted by Wilko @ 03/17/2004 06:54 PM EST

exactly

Posted by mwzloyal @ 03/18/2004 01:11 PM EST

Dude. For all of you who think it was a rumor in the FIRST place need to open their ears and shut their mouths. FUNimation even told us, TOLD us about the rights being bought by FOX. Pretty much everything after that is a rumor. Mmkay? You all are probably wondering how I can be sure about this, or at least the idiots on here. Well use your eyes a little bit (too hard to handle huh?) and maybe you might find some websites. Ai yai yai, and for people thinking it's a BLESSING that the movie isn't being made, you need to pick up some pride in DBZ. You have to at least hope it'll do well, hoping it will NOT be made is NOT the attitude a DBZ fan such as myself should ever have.

Posted by mwzloyal @ 03/18/2004 06:56 PM EST

Of course FOX would tell you if they were making a live action movie right? I mean, why wouldnt they, since you are so far up in the Media ring right? Unless you show us proof of this so called "phone call" there is no reason for anyone who reads this page to believe anything written on it. Show us Proof!

Nice one, mwzloyal.

FUNimation said the proof that the movie would come. If you had been there where this whole hype had started, you would know. Unfortunately, they don't have the information there anymore, just some other popular rumors: www.dragonballz.com.

mwzloyal, why are you even posting here? Why don't YOU get a life. Movies ARE my life. I study film arts, idiot. *sighs* But I love you too. :/

umm... the dbz website gets its information from a fan site also. It says that, "None of this information is confirmed." does that sound official to you?

Dragonballz.com does not know anything, they got the dbz live action movie rumor from Saiyanz Rage, LMFAO! wtf is this man! thats like a fan site.. hello.. which is now gone This is so stupid. FUNimation Inc. needs to be more professional...

(good new for the real dbz fans)

20th Century Fox has acquired the feature film rights to the hugely successful Japanese anime property "DragonBall" for studio division Fox 2000 to develop into a live-action franchise.

Created by Japanese writer Akira Toriyama as a best-selling graphic novel, the property has been translated into a top-rated cartoon series, video games and straight-to-video releases, but the Fox deal marks the first time any company or studio has secured the live-action rights to the property. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

In its various incarnations during the past 15 years, "DragonBall" has followed an epic story between good and evil, centering on the character Goku and a handful of friends who battle for the Earth against the deadly forces of the Saiyans, who are sweeping across the universe, leaving a path of destruction. Goku and friends' best chance for survival rests with the Namekian DragonBalls, which provide them the power to summon a mighty dragon.

"DragonBall" is perhaps best known by American audiences as a series on the Cartoon Network. "DragonBall Z" -- a series of 250-300 episodes that follow Goku's life as he grows up, gets married and has two sons -- debuted on the network in August 1998 and is the highest-rated cartoon on the network.

For last year, "DragonBall" ranked as the year's top item of interest on the Internet based on Lycos searches, topping Britney Spears, Napster and Osama bin Laden, and has become the most popular searched term in the history of the Lycos Top 50.

Fox was so high on acquiring the material that Fox Filmed Entertainment chairman Jim Gianopulos flew to Japan about a month ago to meet with Toriyama and the property's publisher, Shueisha, to confirm the studio's commitment to the project and hammer out the deal. Also as part of the deal, Fox and Shueisha have agreed to collaborate on other properties in the Shueisha library.

"Acquiring 'DragonBall' is a major coup for the studio," Gianopulos said. "It's a really great property because it has all the elements that have made great franchises powerful and endearing. It has a long-standing mythology -- in this case 15 years -- and it's been known by a generation of kids, teens and young adults. There are dozens of characters, fantasy environments and bizarre planets and villains. It's an amazing and creative property, rich in great characters and unique worlds, and we are thrilled to be involved with it."

"I have always drawn my manga (comics) with the desire to create something unique to comics, something that can only be expressed in the form of comics," Toriyama said. "I felt that if I didn't do so, the reason for the existence of my comics will become weak. But recent movies have surprised us by entering such territory that used to belong only to comics with wonderful technology and wisdom."

Gianopulos said the studio has not yet attached a writer or director to the project. He added that it's too early to say if Fox will take New Line Cinema's "Lord of the Rings" route and shoot several pictures concurrently, but that they do have high aspirations for the franchise.

Gianopulos credited his Fox team, including Fox 2000 topper Elizabeth Gabler, Fox Japan marketing head Toshio Furusawa and business affairs senior vp Victoria Rossellini, for helping to put the deal together. Gabler will oversee the project with Fox 2000 director production Jack Leslie.

still hope remains

FluffyJuney:

Check the dates of those links. They're 2 years old, and still nothing new has been released about the movie. Something is obviously wrong, and FOX hasn't made any announcement. They could be delaying it, or it could be cancelled (and according to our sources, it seems like it won't be made).

I dont care ether way, i was thinking that it would be worth seeing. Ether way i heard that there is even an official movie site( or at least a domain name for it the site isnt up yet). You can believe that its cancelled if you wish but ill hold out hope a little longer.

But I still have hope this movie is going to be made. If this movie isn't started by the time I'm 30, I'll go genocidal. Heh, I'm j/k. But FOX themselves had better speak up or I'm going to go to their office and streak in front of the building. :P

I seriously doubt if the people on the forums are as high up as they may claim to be. If I told you that I was President Bush and that I was going to make smoking illegal, would you believe me? ((if you have to think about that one then you should be worried)) Don't believe things on forums, I don't. Just base your arguments on official stuff. And if you do that right now, then there would be no argument at all because nothing official has been posted on this matter so far.

That's the problem. DBZ is meant for children and attracts a children crowd. There will always be stupid rumor mongering every which way. But no fandom crowd has been so stupid so as to make a fake casting list, and a fake poster for something that doesn't exist yet, and claim it authentic. Then, its out-of-country sponsor picks up on the rumor and proceeds to perpetuate it to the fandom. That just tickles me.

Posted by Kyuuten @ 03/27/2004 03:35 PM EST

Although it attracts a children crowd, that does nto necessaraly mean it was ment for children. Also, Fox should at least make a statement. The fact that they have not officially released a statement just shows they are complete jerks.
