01/19/2007 Entry: "More on Vegeta Dvds!"
This February Funimation will release their newest Dragonball Z DVD box set. This package will feature the Saiyan saga of the series and will include:
- The complete Vegeta saga: 39 Episodes on 6 discs.
- 900 Minutes of Action.
- English Voice Track with Original Japanese Music.
- Includes 24 page booklet filled with episode summaries, character descriptions and a DBZ timeline.
The box set is sold for $34.99 at the Official Funimation Dbz store. Funimation stated that this box set was digitally remastered in High Definition frame-by-frame. They claim that the new footage is presented in 16:9 format (1.78:1) with more than 20% new footage on both sides of the screen.
There are a few things that you as a buyer need to keep in mind. Firstly, these Dvds are NOT HD-DVD, they are STILL presented in Standard Definition format (720x480). Secondly, even though funimation claims that their new 16x9 format has allowed for more footage to be seen on the screen, I have to reasons to believe otherwise(I will explain below). Lastly, I am not that confident in Funimation after my experience with their "Ultimate DVDs" of the saiyan saga. After buying 2 of the dvds, I soon realized that there was nothing ultimate about them, the picture quality was horrible. The 5.1 sound however, was done quite nicely. So I don't know what to make of their new promises. Now allow me to entertain you with some before and after images:

Above is a direct comparison between the Widescreen and Fullscreen versions of the series. As you can see, the new Funimation widescreen format delivers new footage on both sides, but also cuts footage from above and bottom of the frame. I just wanted to point that out since funimation didn't mention anything about cutting footage to meet the 16:9 aspect ratio format. However, they did deliver extra footage as they promised, and 39 episodes for $34.99 is a great price. Widescreen footage was captured from the Funimation Dvd Trailers. It would be great if someone could upload some images from the Dvds in the upcoming weeks for the rest of the people to see the quality. 007, over and out

Hi 007...What do you mean by the dvds is not in HD-DVD? They say in the trailers that i have seen that the new dvds are in 1080 p format? So how can you say that they are not? Posted by The Dark Prince @ 01/20/2007 09:25 AM EST |

Awesome, thanks for the comparisons, pretty sweet And HD-DVD, The Dark Prince, is a new type of DVD thats just recently on the market which offers even better video/Audio quality than any DVD available yet. Its rivalling the Blu-Ray which promises the same features but is completely different from the DVD. 1080p is the highest possible quality for a DVD, but for that to be possible... they'd need to have no Menu system, and only 1 episode available really. And they have a menu and an estimate of 5 episodes per disc. So even though they claim this quality... we can't be 100% until we actually get the DVDs. PS. I really like your new Avy 007 Posted by Catterix @ 01/20/2007 10:20 AM EST |

I just ordered my copy. 39 episodes for 34.99 is the best deal you'll find for a TV boxset, and the fact that they are mastered in HD just seals the deal. Posted by Adam @ 01/22/2007 11:13 AM EST |

man the mount of bullshit funimation are saying....16:9 footage? i think not...they just cropped it, whichwill haunt them later =/ (e.g. like when goku finishs off buu everyone appears on the screen...theat will look bad) the footage isn't HD or 1080p since there not on HD DVD discs so it cna't be supported =/ plus all it is, is basically funi's attempt at the dragon box....plus 720x480 would look horrible due to the fact of its cropting...possible the worst resolution out there is 720x480.......i would say that this remastered stuff is a bunch of ****....just go with the dragon box =/ Posted by narutoball @ 01/24/2007 11:18 AM EST |

Let me remind you that ALL SD-DVDs are formated in 720x480 resolution. There is additional footage on both sides of the screen (however, they did cut a little from top and bottom as I mentioned in my news post). I am a little unsure about the quality as well, I will have a full review in a few weeks. Posted by 007 @ 01/24/2007 12:42 PM EST |
